Hurst Green Singers

Hurst Green Singers is a friendly group of young and not so young singers. Normally we perform three concerts a year, two in the summer (jointly with Shoreham Singers) and the other in December, all of which are well attended.

We meet every Tuesday evening during term time in St. John's Church, Hurst Green, at 8.0 pm.

An objective is to encourage new talent and we always welcome new members of whatever age you may be.

There are no auditions, but a willingness to learn and the ability to read music are a great advantage, although not essential when you start as you can pick it up quite quickly. Above all it's about enjoying the stimulation of singing together, the challenge of learning new works and the joy of being part of a successful performance.

The December concert in St John's Church marks the lead–up to Christmas and always ends with a selection of carols, some lesser known and often unaccompanied, others old favourites for both choir and audience participation. It is always a popular event and a highlight of the season.

The Summer Concert, when we are joined by Shoreham Singers, is first performed in St John's Church in May and then repeated at Shoreham church in June. The summer concert is normally accompanied by a small orchestra.

In recent years, as can be seen on the Past Concerts page, we have performed a number of major works by Handel (Solomon, Samson, The Messiah, Belshazzar), Mozart (Requiem, C Minor Mass) etc, as well as an eclectic mix of shorter choral works by a wide range of composers.

2015 is the 30th anniversary of Michael Barlow's involvement as Hurst Green Singers' choir master and conductor and is thus something of a special year of celebration.

Occasionally members of the Choir are invited to sing at weddings and other events at churches and other venues in the area.

We are always looking for new members and will always give you a warm welcome, so if you enjoy singing or think that you might, come along any Tuesday evening in term time just before 8.00 pm and give us a try?

You can find how to get to St John's Church on the Map page and details of dates on the Diary page.
